One of the best online music resources to emerge in the last couple of years has to be The Hype Machine. For the uninitiated, The Hype Machine is an aggregator of MP3 music blogs that allows punters to search for blogs and websites that have both written about a particular band and also made an MP3 available ‘for evaluation purposes’.
Type in the name of a band and it returns a list that you can plough through and listen to right there on the page, or alternatively follow the links to the original sites and read more. Think of it like a Google that returns nothing but music and reviews,… Read the rest

A big thanks to Roots Highway in Italy for their 7.5/10 review of our album, and a big thank you to all the people that have bought the record as a result, we hope you enjoy it.
We can’t read what’s being said in Roots Highway’s review of Lighting and Electrical because unfortunately we cannot read Italian, but it appears to mention that we go about things with “a disarming nonchalance“, and if that is indeed what it says then we’ll take it as a compliment.

San Francisco-based music and culture blog Anyone’s Guess have posted a nice review of the ”Lighting & Electrical” album and included a pretty accurate assessment of our business acumen into the bargain.
“Friends of the stars have a fine operation going, which is to say no operation at all. They make music, pretty durn good music at that, and let the audience take care of themselves.”
Harsh but fair, I think.

The nice folks at Hypeful.com have not only given”Lighting & Electrical” a glowing review on their site but have also labelled us as a “Band To Watch”. Amongst other things they had this to say:
“Their new disc is packed with the kind of authentically sad, lovely, and whiskey-drenched tunes that are tragically absent from the modern country FM dial.”

Congratulations to Pete Ashton on winning a Guardian New Media award for his Created In Birmingham website.
Pete has been kind about our band in the past and in a round-up of other Birmingham blogs/websites he has this to say:
And also on the “lovely people” tip, Friends of the Stars blog well because their souls are pure. What started off as a jokey diary of how rubbish they were at getting their album out has turned into a savvy promotional tool for their music and the scene they operate in, though I suspect a lot of… Read the rest
